Sandburg Women’s Golf Takes Home Galesburg Spring Invite Title

Playing against a field of competitors otherwise made up of four-year colleges, the Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team captured the Galesburg Spring Invitational, which took place Saturday at Lake Bracken Country Club and Sunday at Soangetaha Country Club.
It marked the second-ever event victory for the Chargers, who led by six shots after the first round and won by three strokes. Sandburg shot 358 at Lake Bracken, and the Chargers’ 356 on Sunday was good for third on the day. Their two-day total of 714 edged Illinois College’s 717 for the title.
Freshmen Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) and Madison Newton (Erie, Ill./Erie) each turned in top-10 finishes for the Chargers. Workman placed fifth overall after shooting rounds of 87 and 86. Newton’s first-round 82 was good for second overall, and she finished the tournament at 176 to place eighth individually.
Sophomore Emily Franzoni (Canton, Ill./Canton) shot 91-89 to place 12th, and sophomore Hayley Guilinger (Thomson, Ill./West Carroll) shot 87 in the second round to finish the tournament 21st overall at 187. Sophomore Renee Scheider (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) had rounds of 98 and 99 to place 27th.
Samantha Nichols from Knox, which didn’t field a full team, totaled 161 (79-82) for medalist honors.
